The Scarlet Letter: A is for Atheist

Posted by Pastor Tobin Maker D.D on August 2, 2007

One of my favorite writers in the American language is Nathaniel Hawthorne, who came from a great family of Christians. Mr Hawthorne’s great-great-great- grandfather was an army man who fought peacenik Quakers and bloodthirsty indians, while his great-great grandfather was a judge who faced the horrors of those notorious witches of Salem.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s most famous book is The Scarlet Letter, a frightening and righteous tale of a rare case of perversion in Massachusetts in the 17th century, when that state was not yet under liberal control (this was before the Kennedys arrived on our shores).

The villain of the story is Hester Prynne, who commits the sin of adultery. As a result she receives God’s fitting and inevitable punishment in the form of a baby, which she must bear, since the murder of womb-babies was illegal at the time. She is also punished by man, by way of a bright red letter “A”, which she is forced to wear on her dress so that everyone can know her for what she is.

I remember how the brilliant letter “A” idea was seared into my consciousness when I first read The Scarlet Letter in my college days. It led me to wonder why such a device is not used in today’s society. Would it not be a wonderful thing to be able to recognize sinners and unbelievers of every stripe by merely noting the colorful badges sewn onto their clothing?

Today, in an America filled with adulterers and baby-killers, an even worse sinner casts a shadow over them all—the atheist. Yet atheists are difficult to spot. They hide their sinister cult behind masks of smiles, science and soft, pleasant voices. Your next door neighbor might be an atheist. You just can’t tell.

Imagine if it was simple to identify atheists and their tainted works. Would it not be grand? Think how much easier it would be to protect your children’s eyes, ears and souls from atheists’ influences if their websites, books, movies and yes, even their very clothes, were clearly labeled with a bright scarlet “A”.

What do you think?

Yours in Christ,

Tobin Maker, Resident Pastor, Baptists for Brownback 2008

  1. They oought to have it tattoeed on their HEADS so people can see they are going STRAIGHT TO HELL and avoid them. I think June Gordon should be tattoooed with a BIG A but not for athiest for A$$hole.

  2. Geoff said

Atheists are worse than adulterers and baby killers? What kind of backward thinking is that? Just because some people don’t believe in your little Jesus fairy tale they’re evil and sinners? What’s so sinister about them? Exposing people to rational thought and a more realistic view of the universe sure might undermine the ridiculous notions of some supernatural being who controls the universe, but I’d hardly call it sinister. I thought you religious folks were supposed to love everyone. You’ve sure got a funny way of showing it.

  3. Jodie,

    Shut up and sober up.

    Pastor Maker,

That is a beautifully written piece, which I agree with completely. Not only should the atheists be marked, so should the Liberals with a huge L, which can stand for Loser or Liberal, the definition is the same.

  4. Sanity said

    Jeeshers, grow up.
Why don’t we put an I on your forehead for being an IDOIT and INTOLERANT and INSANITY that you seek to spread.
Last I checked, Jesus said to love your neighbor, and that means no matter what you judge them to be, and not try and push them out cause you have failed to convert them.
And shouldn’t you be talking to them, trying to preach to them instead of avoiding them?
What next, you want the star of david on all the Jews? Oh, you remember who did that, don’t you…Look who you are becoming and look who you are letting lead you there.

Dear Pastor and gentle Mrs GC,

While I love the idea, I worry that with so many filthy, non-American speaking people crawling all over our great Christian (republican baptist) nation, shouldn’t we reconsider using letters (lord knows they can’t read) and go with symbols/pictures like on street signs to depict their sinful ways?

  6. cbv said

Now let me think. What does that remind me of?

Oh, yes, right, Germany back in the early 1930s and 40s, when Jews were required to wear a David’s star.

YOU sir, Mr. Tobin Maker, are NOT a Christ.

You do not even begin to understand what it means to BE a Christ.

  7. How about a big old S for Sinner? That would cover half the population and make it really easy to know who to keep our children away from.

“Connie”, go read a book or two yourself because you’re wrong. If the founding fathers were so into being Christian then why is there a separation of church and state? There’s plenty of evidence that many of the founding fathers, while not atheists, were definitely NOT huge fans of Christianity.

    Hello,
How about yellow stars for Jews? Have any of you people actually read any history.
It is exactly this type of needless insanity that drives any sensible individual towards atheism. Actually, wait a moment. Go on, whats your next big idea? be sure to tell as many people as you can.

  13. Just stuff it, Geoff. You sing the same old poor-me song that every other liberal sings when they can’t come up with something original.

  14. I have to add my voice to others here – the last person to recommend ‘Pastor Maker’s Marvelous Idea©’ was the man who seems more and more to be the idol of the authors of this blog, Adolf Hitler (oh noes!!1! Godwin’s Law!!1!!11) – he was the one who ordered that the people that he designated as ‘evil’ or ‘immoral’ should be marked out with compulsory badges.

Also, by doing this, Mr Maker, wouldn’t you be forcing ’small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark’? :)

  15. Wow, now kaddis was pwnd by the filtering.

Yeh, thats just great. It’s people like you that are going to make freedom of speech a thing of the past. I’m sure Jesus ( real or not ) must be SO proud that you are attaching his name to such a bunch of belligerent, defiled bull-crap.

So in kind, I now form the Tobin Maker Society for the destruction of Jews, Muslims, Gays, Straights, Budists, Babiess, Puppies, Unholy Scotsmen and people who use Java. In your name lets us wipe this scum from the earth and push them into whatever hell they believe in. I only hope Jesus will let you join them there.

  17. This is such a ridiculous post, just completely absurd. My feeling is that people who believe in the Christian god in any real sense would have no time for this sort of nonsense– seriously, why wouldn’t you spend ALL DAY trying to get closer to the being you think has the ability to create universes? I know I would!

But when folks have the time to write stuff like this, it’s pretty clear they’re just using the whole “god thing” as a hiding place from which to fling their poo.

The trouble is that deep down, you really don’t believe. Unfortunately, you’ve made this a centerpiece of your life and part of your reputation, and you don’t have the strength to break with it. Most likely, you also lack the critical thinking skills necessary to have ever begun the process of questioning and thoughtful realization that would have brought you to the rather simple realization that god does not exist, and that religion is an antiquated form of government in direct conflict with democracy.

Still, I don’t expect you to change your mind about your “beliefs,” however unexamined they may be. I do ask, though, that you take a step back and examine your blog and your relationships with others as if you were an outside party. Do you see the conflict you are helping to create? Your blog is a framework for people to come together, but not in discussion or constructive works– only in negativity and ongoing, pointless shouting matches.

  18. Startlingmonker, while your motives are excellent, they wlll get to the word ‘ridiculous’, and, to them, the rest of your words will merely turn into I AM A LIEBERAL MOONBAT SISSIE COMMIE PINKO ATHEIST PAGAN SINNER SODMOMITE, written over and over again. A* for trying, though.

The premise of asking Jesus into your life, is to recognise you are a sinner and that you are for forgiveness and for Him to change you.

We are trying to have a grown up conversation about the threat that atheists pose to this great nation. Pastor Tobin did not advocate killing anyone. Pastor Tobin did not advocate forced conversions. Instead he merely suggested that those that are in league with Satan be identified as such.

I wear a cross on my necklace, one on my bracelet, a WWJD rubber bracelet-thing, and a ring that contains a sliver of the true cross. I make my allegiance clear. I walk the Righteous path. You know your children are safe with me. Now, what of the atheist? We can’t know can we? All we want to know is that is we let our children talk to the man with the ‘A’ on his shirt, that he’s likely to offer them meth or try to sodomize them. Is it so wrong for a parent to want to know this.

All the haters on this site need to realize that is you want to participate in grown up discussions, you need to stop comparing everyone to Nazis and stop the name calling.

Heck, I’ll wear one with pride! I don’t try to hide the fact that I’m an atheist. I’m proud of it. Can we just not make it a scarlet A? Because most people associate that with adultery, which I’ve never involved myself in. I’ll wear a t-shirt that says “atheist” if you send it to me, though.

  32. Psst, Lazarus – McGregor is just having a laugh, as far as I can tell. Unless, that is, he actually just had a Southern Baptist conversion.

You rightfully point out that sometimes these discussions descend to name-calling and this blog becomes hate-filled. Here’s an easy solution. Take your sorry ass elsewhere.

Way to go on the consistency there, WhoDat.

We are trying to have a grown up conversation about the threat that atheists pose to this great nation. Pastor Tobin did not advocate killing anyone. Pastor Tobin did not advocate forced conversions. Instead he merely suggested that those that are in league with Satan be identified as such.

He did, however, employ a tactic that is a Nazi favourite. Inference

I wear a cross on my necklace, one on my bracelet, a WWJD rubber bracelet-thing, and a ring that contains a sliver of the true cross. I make my allegiance clear. I walk the Righteous path. You know your children are safe with me.

Yes yes yes, you have outward signs, but it’s the inward ones that count. Outward signs are a golden calf.

Now, what of the atheist? We can’t know can we?

Whenever anyone starts referring to a group in the third person singular, it’s a bad, bad, sign. Do people who talk like the below quotes sound like good, tolerant people?

    ‘The black man’
    ‘The Jew’
    ‘The gay’

Instead, why not refer to them as ‘atheists’, and not objectify them, making them an ‘other’ for you to fight.

All we want to know is that is we let our children talk to the man with the ‘A’ on his shirt, that he’s likely to offer them meth or try to sodomize them. Is it so wrong for a parent to want to know this.

What’s stopping any sort of predator from wearing a cross, WWJD bracelet, and a ring?

All the haters on this site need to realize that is you want to participate in grown up discussions, you need to stop comparing everyone to Nazis and stop the name calling.

True, but when Pastor Maker basically says ‘those Nazis were onto something there’, we will respond to it.

Oh, and Enola – Revelation (I normally don’t like quoting from here, since some of it is fairly opposed to what Jesus said) 13:16-17.

This is a Godly idea Pastor Maker. To long has the atheist menace been allowed to spread its poison undetected in America. Just look at what has happened; price of oil up, the War of Terror faltering, bridge collapses in Minnesota, we can be sure an atheist was involved in each and ever one of these problems. Why the list possible atheists crimes have done to our society is endless. We need to know who they are and what they are up to now! We need them to were these “A”s and also were GPS tracking collars so we can get a handle on the menace the present to America.

God bless you Pastor Maker. The Lord is clearly with you on this.

I’ve never heard of huge groups of atheists calling for all the “believers” to be marked for easy identification. Someone mentioned how all the religious jewelry they wear makes them seem safe, but I wouldn’t let my kid within 100 yards of them. Last time I checked there were a large number of clergymen who have been accused of molesting children. So, you use The Scarlet Letter as your proud example of publicly branding someone for her sin, but you failed to mention who got Hester Prynne pregnant in the same book. It wsa the local preacher, remember? So, while she is forced to wear a scarlet ltter on her breast and be shunned by her community, the man who got her pregnant is preaching to the same community, with no fear of recrimination.

Forget your lack of love for your atheist brethern, I am more concerned for your lack of fair play for all sinners. You, sire, are a misognisit. The point behind The Scarlet Letter was hypocrisy. Congraulations on helping Hawthorne make his point.

  48. Jeb, FCD said

I also liked how the “Pastor” labeled Hester as the villain. I guess she was an evil temptress who left the priest with little choice but the impregnate her. A pregnancy as punishment? These kinds of people really do need some serious education and personal reflection.

  49. LA Church ‘agrees abuse pay deal’

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6899391.stm

More than 500 people abused by Los Angeles Catholic priests are to receive a record-breaking compensation pay-out, their main lawyer says. The deal, which a judge must approve, is reported to be worth $660m (£324m).

With the alleged abuse dating back to the 1940s, lawyer Ray Boucher said it was payment of a long overdue debt. Cardinal Roger Mahony, the leader of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, later apologised to the victims, pledging that the abuse “will not happen again”. “There really is no way to go back and give them that innocence that was taken from them. The one thing I wish I could give the victims… I cannot,” Cardinal Mahony said.

It would be the largest payment by the US Church since the abuse became public in 2002 and just before a series of trials into sex claims were to begin.
The agreement, if approved, will settle all 15 upcoming paedophilia trials against Los Angeles archdiocese and avoids the threat of Cardinal Mahony being forced to testify about how the Church dealt with abuses spanning the 1940s to 1990s.

Los Angeles diocese records released in the past revealed that for decades priests accused of child sex abuse were simply moved to new assignments or provided with therapy, Church leaders believing that they could be rehabilitated. This latest settlement calls for the release of confidential priest personnel files, Mr Boucher said. “Transparency is a critical part of this and of all resolutions,” he said.

Steven Sanchez, a plaintiff in the case, said he was both relieved and disappointed by the outcome. “I was really emotionally ready to take on the archdiocese in court in less than 48 hours, but I’m glad all victims are going to be compensated,” he said. “I hope all victims will find some type of healing in this process.”

The deal is expected to be officially announced in a joint statement to be released by the plaintiffs and archdiocese later on Sunday, and a news conference will take place on Monday. The reported figure of $660m dwarfs the $157m settlement paid out by the diocese of Boston following a child sex scandal which became public in 2002. The Los Angeles payment, which amounts to an average of $1.3m for each plaintiff, takes the total paid out by US dioceses to $2bn since 1950, with Los Angeles paying about one quarter of that.

Los Angeles is the country’s most populous Catholic diocese, serving more than three million parishioners, but the scandal has brought the archdiocese close to financial ruin. According to Church lawyers the diocese is likely to pay $250m in cash, the rest of the sum being covered by insurance and payments by religious orders.

Earlier this year, Cardinal Mahoney told parishioners in an open letter that the Church would sell its 12-storey administrative building and was considering the sale of about 50 other non-essential properties to raise funds. The abuse has also severely dented confidence in the Church and its leaders.

David Clohessy, national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said while it was the largest settlement by the Church, money was not the key objective for victims. “No settlement, no amount of money, can restore the shattered trust and the stolen childhoods and the betrayed faith of people who were wounded by abusive priests and by complicit bishops,” he said. “But, having said that, certainly this represents a tremendous achievement by these brave survivors, who somehow found the strength to come forward, report the crimes, get legal help, expose the predators and ultimately endure a pretty long, gruelling legal process.”

Since 2002 nearly 1,000 people have filed such claims against the Roman Catholic Church in California alone. In February 2004, a report commissioned by the Church said more than 4,000 Roman Catholic priests in the US had faced sexual abuse allegations in the last 50 years.

If they fail, they should have their head shaved and a red “A” tattoed on there head for ATHIEST. That ways folks will know to keep their children away from them and not to help them if, for example, they house is burning down or something.

What a glorious day it would be if then they would accept the Lord Jesus as their Savior and they could be taken to the local courthouse and have the judge finish the tatto so that it now read: “A CHRISTIAN!”

The researcher behind this study is “surprised and disappointed,” but I’m neither.

Although most religious traditions call on the faithful to serve the poor, a large cross-sectional survey of U.S. physicians found that physicians who are more religious are slightly less likely to practice medicine among the underserved than physicians with no religious affiliation.

In the July/August issue of the Annals of Family Medicine, researchers from the University of Chicago and Yale New Haven Hospital report that 31 percent of physicians who were more religious–as measured by “intrinsic religiosity” as well as frequency of attendance at religious services–practiced among the underserved, compared to 35 percent of physicians who described their religion as atheist, agnostic or none.

Charity, service, self-sacrifice, generosity, and kindness are human properties, not religious virtues. I wouldn’t expect a group of people from a common culture to show much substantial variation in empathy and public service along religious lines.

Despite the fact that he is disappointed in the result, I do have to commend the author for making a positive policy recommendation:

Policy makers and medical educators hoping to increase the physician supply for underserved populations should take these results into account cautiously, said the authors. “No one knows how to select medical students in a way that would actually increase the number of physicians eager to serve the underserved,” Curlin said, “but our findings suggest that admissions officials should ignore both the general religiousness of candidates and their professed sense of calling to medicine.”

Now just branding all atheists with an “A” is just the tough love they need. The shock of a third degree burn to their head will get there attention an make them wake up to the fact they have a problem. After all the first step in solving a problem is admitting you have one.

I is saddening that to the vile anti-Christian hate laws the left has pushed threw we can’t help atheists anymore like we could in the old days. I weep when I think of the number of souls lost to fires of hell because of this. Still, with Jesus’ help Senator Brownback can make it to the Presidency, change some laws and then we really can start helping these atheists in earnest.

I leave to do some work down at the church and this post goes to Hell. At least the comparisons to Nazis have died down. You have to wonder, when Hitler proposed the yellow star for jews, did people go on and on with “But that’s just what the Puritans did!”

Pastor Tobin was merely suggesting we walk in the footsteps of our founding fathers. They lived a Righteous life, why shouldn’t we?

All this resistance to a perfectly reasonable suggestion is why we need a good man like Sam Brownback as President. Like Washington, he won’t worry about what the smelly Europeans once did. He’ll look to our own history for guidance. And let’s not forget, once the children start praying in schools again, there will be a lot fewer atheists out there who have to wear the letter.

    interpreted,
Thank you for your response to my post. I wish you had said something that I could respond to, but as your points were so weak, I would hate to hurt your feelings by responding to them. But remember, just because someone advocates something similar to what happened in German in the 1930-40s or similar to something Hitler did, doesn’t mean that they are Nazis or Hitler-like. Although vegetarians are certainly odd, I think we can both agree that this doesn’t make them Hitler. And an atheist sodomite couldn’t wear the cross, as it would burn his skin.

Aaron SF (we do know what that means), what has led you to believe that people dying of AIDS in Africa are going to Heaven? Only through God’s grace can we be saved. No one can say for sure who is saved and who is not.

  88. Aaron SF said

    Maker,
That’s nice, but really, not the point. I thought the point of christianity was to lead by example being christlike, I just don’t see christ (the guy who sacrificed himself, said not to cast the first stone, befriended sinners etc…) wanting to mark people and sepparate them.

So I’m just saying, you sound a lot more like Hitler than Christ.

    Bless you.

PS: HWR (what what means?) I didn’t mean all people dying of AIDS in africa, just the ones who contracted AIDS via the Catholic churches policy on condomn use (who would therefore presumably be catholic).

Actually, I’ve given the idea of classification quite a bit of thought. It’s hard to tell just looking at people who you are dealing with. Might be a normal American or might be a terrorist…you never know. I thought up a mandatory ID card that could be coded “A” = Atheist, “B” = Blasphemer. “C”= Christian (that would, of course, be the highest possible rating), “D” = Democrat (lowest rating), “E” = Environmentalist….etc, through “Z” = Zionist (I couldn’t think of anything else that began with the letter Z). Of course, a person could have multiple classifications, so, on the back of the ID card, there’s plenty of room for more letters. For Example: ADGHISTVN We could also use the numbers 0-9 to define the severity of the code. For instance, A0 might be hardly an atheist while A9 might be a radical atheist. So the coding could be A3D9G2H5I5S3T8V8N0……I think this would give the authorities a much better picture of who they are dealing with than just a mugshot. My rating is C9R9V0W9 – Stong, pro-war, Christian Republican who couldn’t serve due to a medical condition (“V” = veteran)

Could someone pass this on to Mr. Brownbeck? I’m available for consulting during the weekends if interested.

Okay guys, enough is enough. You people, my supposed “followers” seem to be a bit misguided.

First of all, this lack of faith in me is disturbing. Calling me a harlot? Calling me a sinner? Listen, that’s no way to talk to the Almighty. No cookie for you. I mean, I know I didn’t give you any real evidence of my existence outside the Bible itself. In fact, the Bible seems to contradict most of the things science and fact has so far revealed. Creation in 6 days 10,000 years ago, the flood, etc. No miracles left any solid evidence. But you guys are supposed to have faith, you aren’t supposed to listen to silly facts and reason. After, all, that’s Satan’s way of deluding you and my way of testing you. I mean, I come into your minds while you telepathically shoot me prayers. I am watching you all the time, while you masturbate, while you have sex with your wives and husbands, while you drive from work, while you excrete, even when you pick your nose. Why is it so hard to believe that I have come to this blog, right now, to bestow upon you my wisdom?

Now you guys seem to have gotten some other things wrong, and some other things right. First of all, yeah, I’m pretty mad and hateful. After all, I doom people who don’t believe in me to suffer for eternity. So what if these are upstanding, kind people, just because they don’t believe in my story and existence means they are not worthy. Yeah I know I said I didn’t give you guys much to go on, but come on lets not nitpick. But you guys seem to be ignoring some pretty sage advice given out by me. Like stoning your disobedient children, killing adulterers, and you all seem to be ignoring my instructions on how to sell your children into slavery. Read it, it’s in the Bible, Jesus Christ you guys. I didn’t dictate my will to humankind for what’s convenient to be believed and the rest ignored.

But also, then there is my softy side. Love your neighbor, all men are equal in my eye, turn the other cheek, and my favorite: Leave unto Ceaser which is Ceaser’s. You all seem to be ignoring this also. Taking glee in the fact that another human will die and suffer? That’s not loving at all. You people are sadistic. Hell is too good for Atheists? You mean you actually want someone to suffer MORE than the worst possible suffering they can imagine? Come on, that’s not loving at all. And you are definitely not giving Ceaser his due. Trying to take over America and turn it into a Christian country, that goes specifically against what I said. Don’t you guys pay attention to your media, look at Afghanistan, that’s what happens when a country is ruled by a religion and not by secular common sense.

Wow I’m really disappointed in my creations today.

  129. Lary Crews said

Okay. We did as you asked and put a scarlet A on our blog.
The authors of The Bible (No. God did not write it!) were among the world’s first plagarists, borrowing from myths older than themselves to create the mythical figure they called Jesus Christ.
Almost all the events of the supposed life of Jesus appear in the lives of OTHER mythical figures of far more ancient origin. Nearly all such ’signs’ had been ascribed to other gods, centuries before any Jewish holy man strolled about. Christ’s supposed utterances and wise statements are equally common place, being variously stolen from Jewish scripture, neo-Platonic philosophy or commentaries made by Stoic and Cynic sages.

Here are five fictional gods who served as the basis for the mythical Jesus Christ:

Three thousand years BEFORE the Alleged Christ there was the mytical Egyptian savior known as Horus.
He was born of a virgin on December 25 in a manger with his birth being announced by a star in the East and attended by three wise men. At 12, he was a child teacher in the Temple, and at 30, he was baptized in the river Jordan by “John the Baptist”. He had 12 desciples, two of whom were his “witnesses.” He performed miracles. Horus walked on water. He delivered a “Sermon on the Mount”. He was crucified between two thieves, buried for three days in a tomb, and resurrected. – He was also described at the time as the “Way, the Truth, the Light,” “Messiah,” “God’s Anointed Son,” “the “Son of Man,” the “Good Shepherd,” the “Lamb of God,” the “Word made flesh,” the “Word of Truth,” etc. – He was “the Fisherman” and was associated with the Fish. – Horus was called “the KRST,” or “Anointed One.” – Like Jesus, “Horus was supposed to reign one thousand years.”

Next, just twelve hundred years BEFORE the alleged Christ there was the mythical Greek god named Attis.
Attis was born on December 25 of the Virgin Nana. He was considered the savior who was slain for the salvation of mankind. His body as bread was eaten by his worshippers. His priests were “eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven.” He was both the Divine Son and the Father. On “Black Friday,” he was crucified on a tree, from which his holy blood ran down to redeem the earth. He descended into the underworld. After three days, Attis was resurrected on March 25 (the same day later claimed for Jesue) and called the “Most High God.”

Also twelve hundred years before the alleged Christ there was the mytical Persion god, Mithra.
Mithra was born of a virgin on December 25 in a cave, and his birth was attended by shepherds bearing gifts. He had 12 companions or disciples. He performed miracles. Mithra sacrificed himself for world peace. He was buried in a tomb and after three days rose again. His resurrection was celebrated every year. His sacred day was Sunday, the “Lord’s Day,” hundreds of years before the appearance of Christ. His religion had a eucharist or “Lord’s Supper,” at which Mithra said, “He who shall not eat of my body nor drink of my blood so that he may be one with me and I with him, shall not be saved.”

Then, just nine hundred years before the allged Christ, there was Krishna in India.
Krishna was born of the Virgin Devaki (“Divine One”) on December 25. His earthly father was a carpenter. He died around the age of 30 on a tree, crucified between two thieves. He rose from the dead and ascended to heaven. He was deemed the “Son of God” and “our Lord and Savior,” who came to earth to die for man’s salvation.
One more. Just five centuries before the alleged Christ, there was Dionysus, a Greek god. Dionysus was born of a virgin on December 25 and, as the Holy Child, was placed in a manger. He was a traveling teacher who performed miracles. He was the God of the Vine, and turned water into wine. Dionysus rose from the dead on March 25. He was considered the “Only Begotten Son,” Savior,” “Redeemer,” “Sin Bearer,” Anointed One.”

And, of course, we all know the story of Jesus Christ because we just read it FIVE times.

The earliest defenders of an earthly flesh and blood historical Jesus came along in the 2nd century, and even at that time none of them were able to provide proof for the existence of Jesus, instead they relied on theological reasoning and scriptures to support their claims, eventually winning out through political force, not the validity of their claims.
That is why we here at Rational Thought are certain there was no Jesus Christ.

I don’t know how anyone can truly believe that sinners should be “branded” with a letter/symbol representing their specific sin. I find it curious that you did not mention the character of Arthur Dimsdale, the reverend and father of Hester Prynne’s child, whose cowardice led him into silence when he should have spoken up. I find it interesting that the only theme you found to be of any significance was punishing the woman. Considering that the book focussed on the outting, for lack of a better word, of Dimsdale and exposing his true character, I can only assume that you found Hawethorne’s critique of the hypocrisy and arrogance of the morally self-righteous to be a little too accurate for comfort. Personally, I don’t care about your private perversions; the ones you display in public are grotesque enough. While you may have the fire o’ jeebus in your heart, the spark in your cerebellum was extinguished many years ago. Hence my suggestion for your hat.

Not a bad thing friend. 2 Corinthians 6 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?” I think that is very clear friend.

you really think those branded would care to hear about Jesus?

Not at first naturally, they would be screaming too much. But considering they are not listing to us now that really doesn’t change things. Instead atheists are calling us Christians think like “fairy tale believers” or “batshit nuts”. So there is hope that by looking as the mutilated foreheads in the mirror every morning they will realize that the only hope out of their misery is Christ’s unconditional love.

That is not loving. Love is kind–it does not sound kind at all to point out peoples’ sins to the world.

Friend, which is worse; a moment of public humiliation or an eternity of torment in Hell? Atheists are too locked into their dogma reason it threw rationally that they are facing an eternity of being raped by demons in The Lake of Fire. When Satan’s engorged member is slapping at the buttocks of an atheist in Hell it will be to late for that atheist to repent. Heroic measures are needed here!

BJ Tabor, I must differ with you–I find it incredibly difficult to believe that a person branded by a Christian would then turn around and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. As far as I recall, wearing that letter A did nothing to change Hester’s views about God/church. I would imagine, if full scale branding actually took place (thank goodness this will never happen), the branded people would gather together, completely separating them from Christians. We do live in this world, whether we like it or not. It is inevitable that we will meet people who disagree with us, but, if they are not Christians, we cannot hold them to our standards. They are not bound by the same law and rules we are. We cannot judge them–we can only be witnesses.

Wow. So setting up mass rallies, branding your opponents, et al, aren’t Nazi actions? The reason for the yellow stars was to objectify the Jews, and make them the ‘other’ – the reason for your scarlet ‘a’s is to objectify atheists, and make them the other. Also, I’m a vegetarian.

I also like your reasoning – ‘my arguments are so awesome, they don’t even have to be enunciated!’.

look at the definiton for atheist: Disbelief in the existence of God or gods. now insted of persecuting them, which would probably push them away from you even more. why not try and give them a reason to belive in your god. and if that fails why not let them do as they feel? i mean, its no more trouble to you to hate them in solice whithout persecuting them in a public way.

Remember that Christianity is indeed a minority. But stupidity has a majority. That’s the basis of how Christianity spread. He who doesn’t believe in an imaginary deity, is a realist. That crazy book of ancient stories is just that. Remember that these people have little education in the true ways of the world, therefore they believe what they’re fed. It’s a control thing, and they are just losers.

Ironic that articles like this come out, then people’s comments say Atheists are full of hatred. The people full of fear are those that believe that if they don’t act in a certain way, they will go to enduring punishment. LIke being a little kid who doesn’t eat their veggies. It’s silly, really. They’re living a silly world, doing silly things. Not a good way to spend your life.

I find it interesting that each one comes in and blathers on and on the same redundant prattle and expect us to say “oh wow, I never considered that before…You must be onto something!”

If they are to argue their cause or lack of a cause, I really wish they would be more imaginative.

There are seven principles which Unitarian Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

    * The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
    * Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
    * Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
    * A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
    * The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;

    Good day, Sir.

  231. Brother McGregor/Mrs. T.D. Gaines-Crockett,

Your responses indicate that rational and critical thinking do not exist in your beliefs. I’d like to ask you both a question. How literal is the Christian bible?

I suppose that you both believe that evolution does not exist. Is this correct? Or do you hold a view that God created evolution? Is it plausible that the world is more than 5000 years old? Do you believe that dinosaurs co-existed with man?

I am not asking these questions to start a fight, rather to find your points of view. Regarding the suggestion for Unitarians to go straight to hell – since they are of mixed beliefs, some of them do not believe in hell so they would be hard pressed to think that they would go there.

I am not a member of the UU because of their shared theistic beliefs. The only evidence that I have seen that indicates there is a hell is religion, which is not fact-based when it comes to the superstitions and supernatural taught by them. In other words, there is no real proof that a afterlife hell exists. If there is, please provide a reference, preferably one that includes some fact-based findings like the irrefutable evidence that gravity exists.

    Sincerely.

What next? “My favorite color is yellow and if you don’t like yellow than you are a…”?

It is one thing to disagree with the opinions of someone else, but to have such a childish – no, children are more open minded than that – rather, bigoted approach to people with different beliefs is just sad. I feel saddened by this article and the responses of people that support it. We all have to live together until we die. We should make the best of it.

Challenge your beliefs. If you do and they are still rational, then great you have made progress. If you do and they are not rational, then consider discarding them. My father-in-law believed for many years that if he put wet towels in the hamper that they would catch on fire. Seems funny doesn’t it? It turned out that it wasn’t until many years after he had his first kids that he found out that a fire would not occur. Why the belief that wet towels would cause a fire? It turns out his mother told him that to keep him from putting wet towels in the hamper when he was a kid. He never questioned what she said and for thirty years or so he thought it was true (until his children questioned and disproved it).

I have to suspect now that the moderate Christians allow for Christian fundamentalism to occur. I believe Sam Harris’ book The End of Faith correctly predicts the vehicle that Christian fundamentalism uses to exist – the innocent and mostly good “golden rule” moderate Christians.

  238. Mrs. T.D. Gaines-Crockett,

Wear your “C” shirt with pride and enjoy right to freedom of religion granted to you by our U.S. Constitution. The thing you non Christians fail to understand is that we have heard all this gobbledegook before.
Yes some things do not add up in the Bible-it is a series of Many Books. Each author lived in a different time, they did not consolidate with each other to get “their facts straight”. They paid witness to the histories as they understood them.

The thing that amazes me though…is despite the inconsistencies…is that the total Book comes together more often than IT falls apart.

    YIC

  240. Brother McGregor,

The point I tried to make in my last post is that challenging ones own beliefs is a healthy way to explore oneself spiritually. Previously I challenged you and MTDGC to provide any observable evidence that the hell I am going to exists. The hell challenge was more for my own satisfaction since this cannot be proven. However, I think that challenging your own beliefs is very rewarding. I do it on a daily basis.

I want you to understand that I do not look at the bible as a piece of useless text. It has some very good and useful lessons in it. The biggest problem with the interpretation of the bible by many people, I think, is the mistake to interpret the majority of it literally. There is no doubt in my mind that “..love thy neighbor as thy self” is something that can be used literally today. It tells you to have compassion for other people. However, there are a lot of verses in Leviticus that do not belong in a civilized society. In the same book you have instructions to commit child abuse:

“For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood [shall be] upon him.”

Now consider the old testament – the Jewish writings that set the foundation for their own people thousands of years ago. Both quotes above apply to that time. Of course they are instructed to love their neighbors. They can’t unite if they fight amongst each other. Maybe it was OK to kill your kids if they mouthed off back then. I don’t really know, but this is just one example of how religions need to adapt to changing times. Until this happens (read Sins of the Scripture by Spong) we will still have people taking the writings literally and fundamentalism will continue. This is why we need to critically evaluate what we believe and why.

    Peace.

  241. Brother McGregor said

But rocketscientist, you are assuming that I haven’t challenged this myself. I wasn’t always a Baptist…
there have been many things that i have struggled with and eventually I just threw up my hands and said “I don’t understand any of this!”
Then the small voice bade me reread and reread…The Bible is not a Book one reads once twice…three or four times…It is a Book meant to be dissected so the truth comes out.

Challenge and Challenge again is probably the characteristics of any good Baptist. In a world where “science” tells us one thing and constantly pushes at the tenets of belief, it is probably the Baptist who holds more fervent to his faith than any other.

We are not stone age people scared of the lightning…

Greater concerns are the JCM (Jewish COntrolled Media) and the Jewish doctors who forced circumcision (Mutilation of infants) on America so that it would be harder to tell Jew from Gentile, should anyone here organize themselves the way the German people did when they flocked to Mr. Hitler in 1933 and elected him in a lanslide vote.

  247. Brother McGregor,

So you have challenged and challenged again and still object to homosexuality, sodomy, atheism, and revert to name calling in response to people? I read more of your previous posts and in one you liken someones typing style to a pedophile. You may have challenged your beliefs and been educated, but why is it OK to pick apart someone for their sexual preference or whether or not they engage in sodomy (unless you meant Sodomite – “someone from Sodom”, but regardless)?

I don’t understand why it is important to tell people that don’t practice your religion or live a lifestyle that is not condoned by your religion that they are going to hell, that they deserve to be labeled as something or worse yet, that they deserve to die. Jesus accepted all people. He helped the sick and less able people according to the bible. Why is it OK to not accept everyone? Isn’t that up to God to judge? By insulting, rejecting or being mean to certain people, isn’t that passing judgment? Why is it OK for so much bigotry to exist within a religion that should be about compassion?

It is the absolutism of some of your (and others) comments that tells me thinking has stopped and indoctrination prevails. Please explain if I am wrong.

  262. I have read about quite a few atheist statistics regarding crime, divorce rates, pro bono publico doctor practices and things like that, and they all show that atheists have better percentages than the people they are being compared to. These figures came from secular sources with the exception of the divorce rate study, which was done by a Christian organization. I have to consider all of these numbers with some skepticism because I have not independently verified the studies.

But it would not surprise me if they were true because a lot of atheists consider themselves humanist and consider the wellbeing of all people to be more important than putting faith into a god. To me, this creates less “baggage” when making decisions. A humanist can simply act upon the golden rule (read Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason) and support the elimination of legal, social and cultural practices that infringe on peoples rights as humans.

I think the biggest issue right now with organized religion is when people are moved to take away rights from the individual – victim-less crimes. Examples of this abortion, suicide and homosexuality.

An example of the government doing this is the banning of certain natural growing plants (i.e. cannabis sativa or weed) because government decided that it was not OK for the individual to put it into their body simply for the reason they feared the Mexican immigrants that were doing it and unscientifically associated the plant as the cause of crime.

Anyhow, enjoy your rights to have your own religious beliefs in this country. But don’t violate other peoples rights because you think you know what is best for them (this applies to atheists as well).

  263. Aaron said

I understand what you are saying Rocket, but I think that the majority of people in christianity, catholism, and the muslims don’t deserve respect. Muslims kill their daughters because they got rapped and it’s a sin to have sex before marriage (that’s crazy). Or they suicide bomb because they think they’re going to virgins (not all believe in suicide bombing, but atheists definetally don’t).

I don’t see why the secualrists groups would cherry-pick or have reasons to lie about the atheists statistics. I believe them, even thought they may vary.

  264. Aaron,

I carefully worded my response and did not say that I respect religious beliefs, but I do respect the right of people to have their own beliefs and my right to have an opinion about them. I agree with Dawkins that the only beliefs worth respecting are the ones that are backed by evidence and am skeptical of the ones that don’t seem rational.

There is a motivation to lie if one wants to unfairly make a religion look bad. We are a self-auditing bunch because we are comprised of skeptics and freethinkers. And we would probably be the first to say that something wasn’t right if it appeared so. However, just because someone is atheist doesn’t mean they are fair and just. It wouldn’t surprise me if a small percentages of atheists acted criminally against churches (vandalism, looting, etc), but I don’t have any evidence of this (I haven’t looked into it) and it would be very sad if that happened.

    Peace.

  265. Aaron said

Yes I am sure there are some of them as well, they are being hypocritical, but I guess after being killed for thousands of years these are just minor paybacks, but unecessary at that. You would be suprised at the low number of crimes that non-religious do, and high the religious crime is. I also agree with Dawkins on that 100%, he is a very intelligent man. I seen a show of him talking saying that religious don’t really know who we are, and the head of American Atheists disagreed, but he is right. They think that we worship the devil (even though he is in their bible), and they think we are worse than child molestors, killers, rapists, ect. They are brainwashed and filled with hate.

I will attempt to post this link, but you have seen how censorship goes around here:

Atheist divorce rates lower, conservative Christian divorce rates higher than average according to a study done by Barna Research Group.

    http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

Plenty of other studies like this exist. The scientific (creditable) sources show that the above is true. Faith-based numbers with no research show the opposite – most likely used as a sales tactic for the religion. A quote from the article:

The slogan: “The family that prays together, stays together” is well known. There has been much anecdotal evidence that has led to “unsubstantiated claims that the divorce rate for Christians who attended church regularly, pray together or who meet other conditions is only 1 or 2 percent”. 8 Emphasis ours]. Dr. Tom Ellis, chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Council on the Family said that for “…born-again Christian couples who marry…in the church after having received premarital counseling…and attend church regularly and pray daily together…” experience only 1 divorce out of nearly 39,000 marriages — or 0.00256 percent. 9

A recent study by the Barna Research Group throws extreme doubt on these estimates. Barna released the results of their poll about divorce on 1999-DEC-21. 1 They had interviewed 3,854 adults from the 48 contiguous states. The margin of error is ±2 percentage points. The survey found:
bullet 11% of the adult population is currently divorced.
bullet 25% of adults have had at least one divorce during their lifetime.
bullet Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups, and much higher than Atheists and Agnostics experience.

Exactly Whodat or just living together in Godless sin. The fact remains that no serious study on crime stats exist despite rocketscientist link. I googled the very same last night. I found a lot of “theories” and “presumptions” but nothing that clearly showed that atheists were “just the nicest darn people”.

Re: Stats, as with most things…it is automatically assumed that you belong to a religion at birth. Right on the wee medical band around the ankle of a tiny bonny babe. Now perhaps people denounce this throughout life but their religious birthright still follows them.

Obviously “Christian” people who divorce or commit adultry or murders are not true Christian…and a “non true Christian-or NTC” is as bad as an atheist. One and the same, I’d even say.

Perhaps we ought to have a blog on the difference of TRUE CHRISTIANS (REPUBLICAN BAPTISTS) verses non true christians-all the other mongrel cults.

  287. WhoDat,

Your argument is flawed. In order for one to get divorced, one has to be married. This would limit the surveyed population to “presently or previously divorced atheists” divided by “presently or previously married atheists” (considering spouses that have died, not divorced). Your argument means nothing in regards to this statistic. Personally, I don’t care about the statistics. They probably appear due to religious people making up statistics designed to make atheists look bad.

Two people have tied being a true Baptist to being in the republican party. You are diluted to think that the republican party has your religious interests in hand. Religion is the politician’s/ruler’s way of controlling the masses. Christianity has been used for this purpose for the past 1800 years or so. Thank you Constantine I, the (not so) great. Want another example? Pick a country in the middle east.

Praise Be. And welcome new friend.

  289. Brother McGregor,

Are you implying that the statistics used to identify one’s religion came from what religion they were born into rather than the one they are currently practicing? If you are interested in more details about how the data was collected, it is available if you look for it.

Looks like Baptists have the second highest divorce rate among Christians.

    Also:

Variation in divorce rates by religion:
    Religion % have been divorced
    Jews 30%
    Born-again Christians 27%
    Other Christians 24%
    Atheists, Agnostics 21%

Ron Barrier, Spokespersonn for American Atheists remarked on these findings with some rather caustic comments against organized religion. He said:

“These findings confirm what I have been saying these last five years. Since Atheist ethics are of a higher caliber than religious morals, it stands to reason that our families would be dedicated more to each other than to some invisible monitor in the sky. With Atheism, women and men are equally responsible for a healthy marriage. There is no room in Atheist ethics for the type of ’submissive’ nonsense preached by Baptists and other Christian and/or Jewish groups. Atheists reject, and rightly so, the primitive patriarchal attitudes so prevalent in many religions with respect to marriage.” 2

I don’t think putting any letter to a man’s clothing will make any difference… We people are already judgmental in nature. We tend to criticize even the smallest mistake of others. We always see what others do, especially those that for us is wrong. But how do we really differentiate right from wrong? Only God knows what is wrong and what is right, not the society. The people have no right to criticize anyone. Our duty is to do what God has told us to do – we have to love one another.

On the days that you catch yourself criticizing others, stop for a while and see what you’ve done. Think what others think of you. You might feel what the person you’ve criticized felt… maybe next time, you’ll react differently.

Oh what the crap! I do agree that America has become a terribly morally corrupt nation, and that to be an atheist you have to overlook many things, to the point it’s more like ignoring a creator than believeing there is none. But nonetheless, we shouldn’t be marking them with something because of their beliefs, nor anything else. We have no right to judge anyone! Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We are just as bad as atheists. I don’t give a crap who you are, we all deserve to burn in the pits of hell and face God’s wrath for all eternity. But “For God so loved the world, that he sent his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) It’s by the grace of God that we are saved from his wrath. I’m sorry Yancy, but you must be serving a different Jesus than I’m serving, because my Jesus loves everyone, and desires that none should go to hell. But he’s also just, and can’t allow sin into heaven, unless it is atoned for. And believe me, all of you, if you don’t love your “brother”, then you are no more Christian than the homosexual heroin addict down the street. (1 John 2:9-11 “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where h is going, because the darkness has blinded him.”) Instead of going and avoiding atheists and other sinners who haven’t been cleansed by the Blood of Jesus, we need to go out and evangilize! Preach the gospel constantly! And better yet, start looking at ourselves and making sure that we’re in the light, before telling anyone else that they are in darkness. This really disappointed me, and how some people are AGREEING with it! I think some of you need to go take a look at how Jesus lived and try to follow his example.

  330. Issac
No one here hates sodomites…we hate the sin.
    I thought that was clear…

    You forgot one pertinent scripture

Jesus knew the Law as well as you or me and better. He knows that Deuteronomy 17 says, the witnesses who catch them are to do the stoning. And who wants to cast the first stone under the qualification that Jesus laid down, let him who has no sin cast the first stone.

Jesus with this one statement changes the whole issue. The issue NOW, is not whether the woman should be stoned for her sin, but whether or not they have the right to stone her, in the mist of their sins. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.

So in essence what you are saying is correct…those without sin are entitled…since no one was left except the woman and Jesus.

Then He turns to her (This bit gets forgotten over and over again by the “ye who are without sin, cast the first stone” crowd)
    and He says

JOHN 8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more

Sodomites and idol worshippers and other blasphemes have to stop what they are doing and stop it now!

  331. Isaac said

I wasn’t talking to everyone. But some of the replies I saw were completely agreeing with the article. How do you show love to someone by marking them as an “undesirable”? Then what really fired me up was Yancy talking of Jesus as if Jesus enjoys punishing people and laughs because of their suffering. I’m sorry, I did somewhat overexaggerate, but I was really irritated by that. And I have to agree they do need to stop what they’re doing. I agree with that 100 %. If they don’t they will face God’s judgement, but we’re called to preach the gospel, not mark those who don’t believe right off and avoid them. I’m just putting in my opinions, not trying to judge :) , Oh and while I’m posting this I hope nobody minds if I ask for prayer. After I typed that yesterday I got on my trampoline and blew out my knee. Thanks :) .

  332. Well in this context i believe the marking of the person with a letter is someone who absolutely refuses to change their behaviour.
If on hearing the word as clearly as possible…perhaps several times over and it is still rejected then we are bade not to deal with these people.
We are not allowed to talk or be with these people.

If you said to me, “I don’t believe”
you would not be labelled with any darn letter. I’d try to help you to see the light.
If after several attempts to help you and you still refused His word then, as sad as that might make me, I would have to reject any friendship with you.

I know Mrs Gaines Crockett is not suggesting that we throw out scarlet letters willynilly here and fro. I know she doesn’t plan on dropping them from a dirigible and they laid where they do.
This would be an application after the person refused to be saved or change their evil ways.

The authority for stopping us from further council is God.

Please don’t hit me with the stupid argument of one nation under god or in god we trust being on the money. Both were added long after the founding fathers had died. I scratch In god we trust off of every bill I get with a silver marker so it cannot be seen (as I feel that the practice of placing in god we trust on legal tender is against the law, and no it isn’t against the law for me to remove it, it is only illegal if I were to alter or replace the slogan). Since the pledge was changed in 1954 to incorporate your imaginary friend, that should be proof enough that the founding fathers had no intention of including it in the first place. Not that the founding fathers had a hand in the writing of the pledge, but it was actually written by a baptist minister and the original version did not include god. Secondly it was the Knights of Columbus (boy there is a great man to name your organization after, a cruel slave trader who cut off the hands of native people for not reaching their quota of gold in an area not rich in gold at all, but hey that’s the church for ya, sweep all the unpleasant parts of history under the rug and they never happened)

Pastor Tobin says: “All who accept Christ are Saved. No exceptions.”

So, does that include someone who accepts Christ, but not creation? How about someone who accepts Christ, and accepts global warming? Votes for a Democrat? Sorry, if your religion saves people like that, I want nothing to do with it.

  349. Mike,

You cannot believe in Christ without accepting every word of the Holy Bible (KJV 1611) as the literal truth. Global warming and evilution are anti-Christian lies, contradicted by the scientific facts contained within the Good Book.

A democrat cannot be a true Christian. It is impossible. You’re just being silly now.

Ok, so you “accept every word of the bible as the literal truth”? So if your son or daughter or brother were to become, for example, a Buddhist, you would murder him, as required by Deuteronomy 13:6-10? For that matter, you support murdering anyone who has worshipped another God as required by Deuteronomy 17:2-5? Or killing all homosexuals as required by Leviticus 20:13?

You can’t have it both ways. Either every word of the bible is “the literal truth” and you kill all the people as ordered by the bible, or the bible is NOT the literal truth and you don’t. How many people have you murdered in the name of God this week, pastor?

Well, I said “for example”. But that said, I take it you don’t know your bible very well. I cited chapter & verse, but since you apparently don’t know how to look it up, I’ll post it…

    Deuteronomy 13:6-10:

6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; 7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; 8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: 9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. 10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. [1]

    Deuteronomy 17:2-5:
2 If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the Lord thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the Lord thy God, in transgressing his covenant, 3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; 4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel: 5 Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing, unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones, till they die

    Wow…just…wow…

At first I thought that this post (which I found a link to) was some form of aatiee. Unfortunately, the further I read, the more I was disturbed, simply because, you actually believe this.

I’m not even sure where to begin, but I guess I’ll start with the author’s misunderstanding of the main theme of The Scarlet Letter. This book was meant as a warning. It shows, exactly why, Puritanical law tainted a part of the past (as if the Salem Witch Trials didn’t do that enough). There can be little doubt of Hawthorne’s disdain for the stern morality and rigidity of the Puritans. It would appear that lessons such as this are wasted on those who fail to understand that only the foolish actively attempt to repeat history, learning nothing from it.

Next, I am completely amazed that after issuing a condemnation of an entire group of people (to put it in simpler terms, a judgement…something that the bible says only Yahweh can provide), Pastor Tobin has the audacity to cry that he’s been persecuted! Are you honestly shocked that after writing an intentionally inflammatory piece, that the people who you condemn would call you to task? Adding the letters DD behind your name (an honorific that holds no weight in the real world, I may add), do not make you an authority; nor do they offer you any sort of infallibility or protection. The same ‘degree’ is available for $25 american thru the ULC website.

I’m even more concerned by the fact that not a single conservative on this site knows the bible, as well as they claim. Jesus, by the very word you claim to take as literal, was a LIBERAL. He did not associate with the rich, or the powerful. Instead he spoke of charity. He spoke of loving all. He walked among those viewed as low, by society…theives, beggars, prostitutes, the sick and the lame, and criminals…without prejuidice.

I don’t know why I’m surprised or saddened by this…fundamentalists have a long standing tradition of ignoring fact, to uphold their myth.

This suggestion is the most absurd thing that I’ve heard in a while. Branding people with a red hot iron just because they do not follow your blind belief in an unproven God? Because they escaped from foolish Christian indoctrination at an early age?

Tell me, exactly how is this “showing God’s love”? Burning people with molten branding irons is not a way to spread “his” word. Can you show me one dedicated Atheist cult movement that molests children in the name of “The Lord”? I definitely can show you SEVERAL Christian ones. Christianity has long served as a catalyst for innecessary violence, looking at this page makes me understand why. Expressing intolerance for others people’s belief by giving them third degree burns is expressing a barbaric and savage predisposition towards others.

I’ve seen several of you Christians be unabashedly racist and hateful, but tell me now, did God not create “all man in his image”? If so, if your supposed God wishes hate upon Blacks, why did he create them looking like him? Is the color of a persons skin, for which they HAVE NO choice in the matter, a valid reason for discrimination and racism? How about being born into and atheistic society instead of being blindly indoctrinated by Christians? Is this a reason for such violence and cruelty?

Some of you uneducated people may be scoffed to learn that homosexuality is genetic, meaning that the children born with it have no choice whatsoever, but I’m willing to bet that you will continue to express your “righteous” hate towards millions of people around the world, whom I am sure you would kill, rape, and burn if given the opportunity.

Like many who have commented, I thought that this story was a satire on religious fundamentalists. It’s scary that it’s not.

To the more hateful posters on this blog, I suggest a small exercise. For a moment, use your imagination. Imagine that there is no God, that judgment day isn’t going to happen, that there is no heaven or hell, that Jesus was just a historical figure. I know you don’t believe this, but just pretend for a moment. Now once you’ve got this idea firmly in your head, go back and read some of your posts.

Maybe some of you will realize that it’s not the atheists that are acting in an evil and hateful manner.

The sad part is that most of you are probably good people in every other aspect of your life. The religion has so brainwashed you that you can’t see the harm you’re causing. You actually think that you are doing good by pushing these intolerant ideas.

Actually, The Scarlett Letter was a novel written by Hawthorne about the horrors of puritan culture and how the punishment for sin only leads to hardship for all involved, including those giving out the punishment. Prynne, no matter what you say, happens to be the storys main protagonist, Hawthorne makes it very clear that in spite of her sin, she is the only moral, sane, and well natured individual in the entire novel. Cunningham, who follows the bible competely and as a result, seeks revenge for Hesters sins, is in fact the villian and is the one who suffers the most at the end.

By the way, Hawthorne was so disgusted by the acts of his ancestors (especially the judge at the salem witch trials) that he changed his surname as a result. His great grandfather was named Hathorne, Hawthorne added a letter to his last name to keep himself from being associated with that past.

Also, a scarlett letter of sorts was used as recently as the 20th Century, it was a Star of David placed on the clothing of Hebrews during the holucost.

And really, who are you to judge what should and should not be done to athiests? Shouldn’t the judging be left up to the Lord? Isn’t that what he, his son, and the prophets said on numerous occassions?

You have misread Hawthorne to fit into your very narrow, very wrong world view. You know nothing about literature. You know nothing about language. You know nothing about poetic devices. I doubt you know much about the religion you claim to follow.

Keep the academics to those who were actually educated.

(not all atheists are bad people)

While that is true, God doesn’t count people out based on good or bad. The only thing that matters, is if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and have been saved by the shedding of His blood, and have accepted Him as your personal Savior. We cannot be saved by our own goodness. This is my belief, and I do not raile against yours. You live in a world without God, (A=no, theist=God), and tho I cannot understand that belief, I know that it takes more faith to believe the way you do than it does for me to believe the way I do.

I hope some day that you will change your belief, but only you can do that. To deny God, doesn’t make Him non-existant, just as denying that George Washington lived, makes him non-existant, and in the end reading and studying both may bring you to the reality that both are real.

I agree, Don’t Worry, that people will not turn to a higher power, who’s followers are filled with hate. Since I believe in a God who loves His children and commands them to love others, I find it hard to do any less. Even morality demands that we turn away from things that are wrong,(sin), but never does the word of God demand that we hate the sinner. I hope this explains a little about what true christians are like, and that we won’t be linked with those who teach differently.

Religion is a big crock of shit.

People solve problems not prayers. Thats one of the reasons why america is in such a deep pile of shit, because instead of us all uniting together and fixing the problem, we go to our local church or whatever and pray for a better tomorrow. Well guess what God is not going to save us when Judgement Day comes around. In fact, that day is not going to be because of God’s wrath, it will be from, the air being so fucking polluted from greedy factory companies, we will eventually run out of food to feed everyone on this planet because it is so fucking over-populated, and worse of all we will all kill each other because of our indiffernces in religion. That is why I belive that there is no gods. We make our own problems because of our selfish desires. I chose atheism because it is the truth that religious fucks have been trying to keep from you. They know it but will never admit it. If you don’t want a world that is dead, them start fixing problems instead of making more. We still have the chance from facing a horrible fate. So here is what you do:

Stop fucking reading this… or better yet send this message to everyone you know. Let the people of America and the world know that if we don’t get off our lazy asses, we will there will be no future for our children and their children and every generation after that. Because do we not want what is best for our children?

No more games. I am not going to stay in hiding anymore. I will reveal who I am. My name is Aaron Anderson. I am from Federal Way, Washington. I am eighteen years old and I am an atheist. If anyone who reads this knows who I am, then you just learned something about me that I bet that you never would have guessed. To my family, I am sorry if this comes as a major disappointment to you, but this was the conclusion I drew about life after many years of long and hard deep thinking. I am also sorry if I let you down in anyway. I hope you will still love me anyway. And by the way don’t try to change my mind either. I have made the decision and will stick to it. To everyone else: if you don’t like what you read, then fuck off. If you do, do something about our worldly problems instead you doing your daily “crock of shit” routines.

One last note, my dad always told me to be apart of the solution, not the problem. Those are words that everyone needs to understand. If you don’t then I wish you best of luck at trying to make the world a better place to live.

    Peace everyone.

The second coming of God is at hand. Take heed and make note. God has returned. He has come to dismantel a broken down split-up disfunctional Church. He is going to strike out the words of the Romans and rebuild the Church in his own words. Start by opening your bible to the title page that reads “New Testament”. Strike out the words New Testament and retitle this page “Roman Mythology”. You have now completed the first step in rebuilding Gods Church. Don’t toss your bible out, Gods word is mixed in with the word of man. God is going to tell you what is his and what belongs to the Romans.

  405. Mel Steffir said

In the Spring of 2006 God sent a message. The message is about the meaning of First is Last and Last is First. The message is this:
In the morning I go to Heaven. In the afternoon I live my life. In the evening I die, death.
What does this mean? It means that Birth is Last and Last is Birth. God also gives and example so that you can understand this better. Example: Mike Douglas died on his Birthday. (Note that Mike Douglas and Michael Douglas are two different people.)

  406. Mel Steffir said

In 2007 God had this to say: We each die in succession, then we are born on the same day.
God also gives proof that this message is from him. The proof is in the story of 3 famous people, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin and Nancy Reagan. Mike Douglas dies on his birthday. Merv Griffin dies the day after Mike. Merv and Nancy Reagan are born on the same day. Gods gives proof for all of his messages. Don’t believe in anything without proof. The Church doesn’t give you any proof that anything in the bible is from God.

  407. Mel Steffir said

God is also saying that Mike, Merv and Nancy are going to Heaven. Pope Benedict XVI goes to Heaven too. God also gave 3 examples of people that are going to Heaven, Hell and Death.
Richard Dawkins: Heaven. Leona Helmsley: Hell. Jerry Falwell Vanishes, or Death. Now you can do your own research on these people to understand why this is their destiny. Gods proof is in the meaning of their names. Example, “Daw” means Gods favorite. You can research that for yourself. Note God is saying that Good Atheists go to Heaven. You don’t have to believe in God or Jesus.

  408. Mel Steffir said

Correction: To the meaning of First is Last and Last is First. It means that Birth is Last and Birth is First. Sorry for the error. God talks in symbols and opposites at times, so it takes time to figure out what he is saying. Some of his messages are clearer than others, plus they have multiple meanings.

Have any of you Christians ever tried asking an atheist why they don’t believe? I have come to my own conclusion that if Christianity is the one true religion, I would rather be in hell then in heaven with judgmental hypocrites.

Nathanial Hawthorn didn’t have a good and upright Christian family–his grand-father was a judge in the Salem Witch Trials, which we all know murdered innocent men and women. The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables was exposing the evils of Puritanism.

And aren’t you Christians that are calling for atheist like me to be branded with an A on my forehead doing exactly what you fear? The government could care less if you are an atheist or Christian, so they have no need to label you with some kind of “Mark of the Beast.”

So now I finally understand. Christians seem to be full of hatred for snyone who does not agree with them. I was a Christian until I read all these awful messages – obviously Christians do not follow Christ’s teachings so I have decided it is not for me. I am sure that all religions can not be so false and that I can find another.

Actually, the Scarlet A is part of an “atheist” campaign (I put “atheist” in quotes because most atheists don’t define themselves by what they don’t believe. Sane people believe that human beings are defined my more than their absence of faith), not a Christian one, to identify atheists with their own unique symbol. The problem with the campaign is that anti-dogmatics wear the A (which makes them easier to avoid) and actual atheists don’t feel the need for a ridiculous gimmick to draw attention to themselves so they can regurgitate The Selfish Gene every time someone appears bored enough to listen.

I can respect a person who chooses to not believe in the same things I believe in, but anti-dogmatics are incredibly annoying. Give me a guy who doesn’t believe in anything over a guy whose belief system is a noxious mix of Starbucks and Dawkins.
