On Thursday, a Hindu chaplain from Reno, Nevada, by the name of Rajan Zed is scheduled to deliver the opening prayer in the U.S. Senate. Zed tells the Las Vegas Sun that in his prayer he will likely include references to ancient Hindu scriptures, including Rig Veda, Upanishards, and Bhagavard-Gita. Historians believe it will be the first Hindu prayer ever read at the Senate since it was formed in 1789.WallBuilders president David Barton is questioning why the U.S. government is seeking the invocation of a non-monotheistic god. Barton points out that since Hindus worship multiple gods, the prayer will be completely outside the American paradigm, flying in the face of the American motto “One Nation Under God.”

“In Hindu, you have not one God, but many, many, many, many, many gods,” the Christian historian explains. “And certainly that was never in the minds of those who did the Constitution, did the Declaration [of Independence] when they talked about Creator — that’s not one that fits here because we don’t know which creator we’re talking about within the Hindu religion.”

Barton says given the fact that Hindus are a tiny constituency of the American public, he questions the motivation of Senate leaders. “This is not a religion that has produced great things in the world,” he observes. “You look at India, you look at Nepal — there’s persecution going in both of those countries that is gendered by the religious belief that is present there, and Hindu dominates in both of those countries.”
And while Barton acknowledges there is not constitutional problem with a Hindu prayer in the Senate, he wonders about the political side of it. “One definitely wonders about the pragmatic side of it,” he says. “What is the message, and why is the message needed? And will it actually communicate anything other than engender with folks like me a lot of questions?”
Barton says he knows of at least seven cases where Christians have lost their bid to express their own faith in a public prayer.
Zed is reportedly the first Hindu to deliver opening prayers in an American state legislature, having done so in both the Nevada State Assembly and Nevada State Senate earlier this year. He has stated that Thursday’s prayer will be “universal in approach,” despite being drawn from Hindu religious texts.

If I were a Senator I’d stick my hands in my ears and pray my own prayer. I’d be just loud enough so that everyone could hear me and look to see the point I was making. This is America, why the heck are Hindus even allowed on the flor of the Senate? I’d be afraid they’d have a bomb or soemthing.

Connie: You’re right about one thing–this is America. Therefore, EVERYONE has equal rights no matter their religious beliefs, skin color, etc, etc. That would include a Hindu. (which is the fifth largest religion in the world…with 800 million followers…chances are some are in this country.) And why would they have a bomb? Hindu is a branch off Buddhism basically…it’s quite peaceful. Yes, persecution does exist but that is with any religion. Christianity included. Extremists do the things you speak of (jihad, bombings, genocide, etc, etc.) And I thought Islam was the bombing stereotype here. Why the change? Or, does everything that you don’t see as native to America come with a bomb threat? Unless you’re a full-blooded Native American Indian you didn’t come from here either. You are just another contribution to the “melting pot.”

People that don’t speak English would say the same of you. If a represenative goes to a foreign country and offers to open in prayer then that would be ok with you because it would be Christian and your beliefs (loosely). They probably wouldn’t understand the English, but it’s a peaceful offer and taken respectfully. (just an example) Though…they might would understand condsidering the average education level of someone in India (for example) is a four year college degree…compared to the eighth grade here in America. Becoming bilingual is part of that education over there in many cases. To me, that makes America look kinda stupid. Just a thought.

This is a Christian nation built on a Christian foundation. Never, not one time, in any of our Government documents, does it say that it’s acceptable for a Hindu to lead the Senate in pseudo-prayer.

Replying to Mr Yancy. there are lots of christians all over the world of all hues. just because they are a different shade– are they discriminated according to their colour in the eyes of God. Does God favour a white christian more than a darker one. If you got your scriptures right– Jesus was born in the Middle East and His family were from the Middle East– He would have been a different shade from European whites which make up most of America. Has anyone thought of that or people generally assume Him to be white– white as portrayed by European renaissance painters and other painters over the centuries. one thing i would like to clarify is that good education is not restricted to America and is not a Colonial residue in large parts of this world. american media is very prone to giving limited insular news and coverage which accounts for large parts of the country being very insular in their knowledge base of the wider world. this limited exposure causes america to be misundersood. and also american international policies do not function as efficiently. improve yourselves folks and learn to live in harmony primarily with yourselves, within yourselves.

If God does not discriminate — who are people to. it is some people from all religions who are insecure and not at peace with themselves or their faith who persecute or slander and abuse by using vituperative venomous language and use obnoxious violent methods. God is kind and gentle and is not an angry abusive God out to discriminate and kill and slander and persecute. If in people eyes, God is such, then it is the end of the world. Why can’t people live and let live. why can’t people embrace society in all its diversity. Why can’t people be gentle and good and kind. When people are insecure they feel threatened by other religions. fundamentalism in ALL religions is a blasphemy against God . Each person must campaign against such fundamentalism. Matthew 19:24, Mark 10:25 and Luke 18:25 all say, “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” If riches create such tremendous difficulty to truly see God why would he reward with them. You are contradicting the very doctrine you proclaim. When Jesus is asked by the rich young man, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Again, the entire gospel contradicts your concept of favor through finance. Matthew 20:16 says, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
Matthew 5:3-9 tell us:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
With love and concern I would implore any one not too clouded with bigotry and bad doctrine to acknowledge that you alone will give account to God for yourself for each and every idol word, you speak type or refrain from speaking. He will ask you why you called his child a ‘rag-head’ or ‘nigger’; why you puffed up and filled yourselves with unwarranted pride and false God’s in idolatry of yourselves. Your leadership here is poor, and along the way you have been lied to about how God desires for you to see his fellow child and live as his. Meditate on the following scriptures if you have the humility to:
Proverbs 42:12 “If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,”
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who guards your life know it?
Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?”
Matthew 7:22-27 “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Revelations 22:18 “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.”
